Personal Essay
Personal Qualities
This year many things have changed since the first day I set foot on this campus. My mentality, personal working habits, the amount of seriousness I put into going to school and my confidence. Before I would always procrastinate which caused me to never turn in my work in time; my schedule was extremely full and didn’t really have time to procrastinate. Everyday right afters school I had swim practice, I had about 45 minutes to finish as much homework as I could. But instead I used it to talk to friends and didn’t prioritize school. This habit continued until sophomore year, I found that I was stressing myself out more when I didn’t prioritize what I needed to than when I actually did my work on time. I started to notice my grades dropping as well as my motivation to continue, this needed to change. In order to get good grades, a clean slate. I decided to quit swimming until I got my grades back up (after 9 yrs). However, I was going to achieve what I wanted the correct way.
Interpersonal abilities
I have always been into doing things around others, if I can be with my friends and help my school or the community I’m okay with it. So I decided to join many clubs and even lead a bevy (club). I never thought I would become one to lead people. I always felt like I never had the confidence to do it, but I proved myself wrong. I tried something new and it wasn’t that bad, in fact I really enjoyed working with all the younger kids at my school. I joined youth red cross, compete against others robotics team, I tutor elementary kids after school and I am also leading a Netflix bevy. Participating in all these activities has honestly helped me break out of my shell and grow as a person.
Technology
Technology is becoming a main factor in our generation, facilitators have pointed out that we should all learn how to program as soon as possible, mainly because it’s a great skill to learn especially while in high school. This is something that we can all greatly benefit from in the future. So I decided to learn. It’s hard and easy to just give up, but I just want to be able t create whatever I want. With programming anything is possible. During my senior year I noticed myself having to learn more ways to use technology to improve the quality of work I create as well.
Demonstrating an understanding
I have always been involved in something, from swimming to boxing. Whenever I have a moment that I’m not in practice; you’ll find me helping little kids. This is something I enjoy but requires a lot of time management on my part. It’s not easy balancing school and extra curricular but I really enjoy what I do. I’ve been swimming for about nine years and started boxing last year. My years at here have been great, but since I did come as a transfer student I realized how different ACLC’s system was. They had a whole different teaching style and beliefs. For example we as students are allowed to create any type of small bevy (or club) as long as leadership students approve of it. In other schools if the teacher says no the decision is final. Here learners have a voice and power to change things for the better good. Being in this type of environment allowed me to gain extremely better public speaking skills. Things like learner led conferences to skits we have to perform in front of English class has all benefited me. We also collaborate a lot with our peers especially during project. Most of the time we make short presentations to inform our class on what we learned. This was challenging at first, but it’s pretty fun after you get the hang of it. Another thing that ACLC has are free period/work periods, these are times when learners can go into the center and work on any homework or projects they need to complete. Most schools don’t have this because students are responsible enough to manage their time without a person reminding them over and over again. This is one of the things I feel like ACLC prepares us to succeed in the future. We need to start learning at a young age how to manage our time so in the future it won’t be difficult for us to cope.
Conclusion:
I have gained many skills over the years that I never thought I would. I am happy of what I have been able to accomplish here in ACLC. I gained the confidence that I needed to succeed in the future, my public speaking skills have improved. I am more outgoing than ever, and I am ready to conquer the world.
